The high level of pesticides in today's produce is alarming. While I am an advocate of making highly nutritious homemade baby food for your little one, it is best to purchase organic fruits and vegetables which are free of pesticides.
Buying organic fruits and vegetables can be expensive. Even organic commercial jarred baby food is significantly higher in price. As moms, we want the best for our babies but we don't want to break the bank either. The best way to offer your baby organic fruits and veggies is to grow your own!
You can grow many fruits and veggies in flower pots or other containers right in your yard, back porch, patio, or balcony. And if you have a toddler, what fun you will have planting and harvesting your crops while teaching your little farmer valuable lessons in home grown foods. Additionally, you will be certain there are no harmful pesticides in the fruits and veggies you serve to your family.
Vegetables & Fruits that are suitable for container gardening include:
Tomatoes
Cabbage
Leaf Lettuce
Green Peppers
Onions
Radishes
Parsley
Green Beans
Eggplant
Carrots
Pea Pods
Cucumber
Spinach
Summer Squash
Strawberries
Blueberries
Dwarf Fruit Trees
I have had great success growing many of these varieties in pots on my patio. The results are amazing and you will have an abundance of home grown fruits and vegetables that you can give to your little one. Places like The Home Depot, Meijers, or English Gardens, have a great variety of fruits and vegetable starter plants available in early spring.
Live in a colder climate? Well the winters here in Michigan can be fierce, but indoor gardening, is certainly an option if you wish to grow all year round. Many fruits and vegetables can be grown indoors including many herb varieties.
